but we only took enough to get to the sunrise

You and I sapped the sun. We bottled it in jars that lit the night and made us feel safe in the dark. We stole the photons until the sunrise became a fairy tale, and our night became endless.

We knew what we were doing and we did it anyway. Now we hold our jars and we hold our children. We watch our jars fading in the featureless dark. We watch our children do the same.

Do you remember us young and sapping the sun? I remember you then, face tan and still bright. Before this all began, before I loved you. I wonder if I could still love you in this fading light.
